If I Could Tell You by W.H. Auden

Time will say nothing but I told you so,
Time only knows the price we have to pay;
If I could tell you I would let you know.

If we should weep when clowns put on their show,
If we should stumble when musicians play,
Time will say nothing but I told you so.

There are no fortunes to be told, although,
Because I love you more than I can say,
If I could tell you I would let you know.

The winds must come from somewhere when they blow,
There must be reasons why the leaves decay;
Time will say nothing but I told you so.

Perhaps the roses really want to grow,
The vision seriously intends to stay;
If I could tell you I would let you know.

Suppose all the lions get up and go,
And all the brooks and soldiers run away;
Will Time say nothing but I told you so?
If I could tell you I would let you know.

"Among those whom I like, I can find no common denominator, but among those whom I love, I can: all of them make me laugh." - W.H. Auden

Quatrain by Faiz Ahmed Faiz

Zabt ka aih'd bhi hai, shauq ka
paiman bhi hai
aih'd-o-paiman se guzar jaane ko ji
chahta hai
dard itna hai ke har rag mein hai
maih'shar barpa
aur sukoon aisa ke mar'jaane ko ji
chahta hai

- Faiz Ahmed Faiz

Translation
:
My vow of restraint, also my desire's covenant.
But I wish to move beyond both pledges and promises.
Pain so intense, there's a riot in every vein--
and such tranquility that I'd rather cease to be.

LIFE, LIFE

I tailored the age to fit me.
We walked to the south, raising dust above the steppe;
The tall weeds fumed; the grasshopper danced,
Touching its antenna to the horse-shoes - and it prophesied,
Threatening me with destruction, like a monk.
I strapped my fate to the saddle;
And even now, in these coming times,
I stand up in the stirrups like a child.

I'm satisfied with deathlessness,
For my blood to flow from age to age.
Yet for a corner whose warmth I could rely on
I'd willingly have given all my life,
Whenever her flying needle
Tugged me, like a thread, around the globe.

PUNE-MUMBAI EXPRESS HIGHWAY

Saturday, July 02, 2005

In Italy, for 30 years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love; they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The Cuckoo Clock.
